PerryPerkinsBooks Editing Services
Here’s what I do:
I not only read your manuscript, I line edit and critique it as well. This means I will tidy up spelling, punctuation, grammatical and typographical errors, and then prepare a detailed list of what I perceive to be the strengths and weaknesses of your writing style.
Most editorial professionals structure their services into three categories: critique, line editing, and extensive rewriting. Their rates for a complete manuscript also fall into three categories:
1. Ouch.
2. You’ve got to be kidding!
3. Absolutely outrageous.
I like to structure my services into one simple category. I prefer to work with a complete manuscript, and I prefer to offer a complete editorial package. For entire, completed novels (no page limit), my flat rate is $250.00
Yes, two hundred and fifty dollars. This flat rate includes multiple readings, line by line editing, typo termination, general cleanup, extensive constructive critique, unlimited future consultations, and discounts on future services.
How can I charge only $250?
First, consider who I am…
Though I am a published writer and novelist, I’m still basically a nobody. If you should choose me to edit and critique your novel, you will not be paying for my reputation, for my brand name, or for my decades of experience.
You will not be paying for my status or lavish lifestyle. (I drive a ‘96 Civic, lol.)
When you pay for my services, you will pay only for the information I provide. I write Christian novels and non-fiction articles. I love writing, and I love providing editorial services to other writers.
I prefer to work with a complete manuscript, and I prefer to write on the manuscript in email-copy, but the manuscript must be double-spaced. Please show your word count, use a standard 12 point font, and leave at least one inch margins all the way around the page.
If you choose a hard copy edit, I’ll use a red pen to mark your manuscript with easy to understand proofreading symbols and comments. For electronic submissions, I will highlight my notes in red.
Here’s what I don’t do:
I don’t rewrite your work. I will certainly offer my ideas and suggestions for reworking certain problem areas, but I will never tell you how you should rewrite your story. Your style is completely your own. I am a cleaner, not a creator. As a ”copy-editor” I will point out problems so YOU can rewrite your work in your own style to make it a better creation.
(I am also available as an experienced ”ghost-writer” following the editing process, and would be happy to help polish your prose, please feel free to conatct me regarding rates for this additional service.)
I don’t show your work to anyone. Period.
I don’t copy your work for my own personal use. I will never use examples of your work on this website or as I teach or critique. Everything you send to me carries your copyright, whether the work is specifically marked with the copyright symbol or not. I understand this.
I don’t keep a copy of your work once the project is finished. All materials and/or notes that are not returned to you will be destroyed in a timely manner. I will, however, probably be looking forward to buying a copy of your book when it hits the shelves!
I know how precious your work is to you. The process of writing is an exhilarating, rewarding adventure. When it’s finished, who knows where it may lead?
Oh, and just FYI, the above pricing is for book-length (50k+ words) fiction/non-fiction manuscripts.
I would also be happy to quote you a price for:
Fiction or Nonfiction Novellas (10k – 49,999k words)
Fiction or Nonfiction articles/short stories (1 – 9,999 words)
Fiction or Nonfiction Book Proposals
Fiction or Nonfiction Article Proposals
Resume/Cover letters
Web content
I would be honored to work with you!
So, what now?
Please email me first, before sending your work. After we’ve confirmed your project then, you may email me your manuscript or, in a securely taped, sturdy cardboard manuscript box, send your entire novel or short story, a check or money order for the complete agreed-upon payment for my services (including the amount to return your package back to you — a.k.a. the SASE), and anything else you may want to send (nothing that needs to be fed, please).
Please do not send your only copy of anything. Please use my complete and correct address.
